If you were offered the opportunity to find health problems before they started, wouldn't you jump at the chance? National Women's Checkup Day is a good time to remind you all that just one day of paying attention to your health could add years to your life.

Yet, despite that chance, when you consider the bulk of your to-do list, it's no wonder that you might feel a bit weighed down with all the things competing for your time and attention.

And without fail, the something that almost always falls to the bottom of the list is you.

Nurses are among the most committed and caring health care providers around.

OK, I may be biased. In addition to running boutron, I am also a nurse. After graduating college with my business degree, I just couldn't give up my longing to be a nurse. It's in my DNA—and if you ask any nurse, I'd bet that 99 percent would agree that the caring and nurturing is something we are born with.

I wasn't raised to believe in Santa, although I must admit that it would have been fun to celebrate once a year with a portly, jolly, white-bearded man with whom I could share my wishes and who would give me an incentive to behave all year long.

I never did get to reach into his bag to pull out a special gift, see his sleigh or pet his reindeer, sit on his lap to stroke his beard or get close enough to hear his "ho, ho, ho" and leave with a feeling that I would be taken care of by this jolly old man.

Now that the election is over, it might be a good time to think about practical matters—like health care.

As always, there's a lot of confusion—especially post-election. And, yes, the insurance system may soon change, but, for now, you will likely want to make sure you have insurance for the coming year. And the deadline for open enrollment on the individual market is January 31.

5 Things a Flat Tire Taught Me About Life

Long Description:
A flat tire on the way to the dentist gives new appreciation for lessons your elders tried to teach you.

I hate going to the dentist—especially when it's of the oral surgery variety. My mouth has had so much work done that if it were my face I'd look like a Joan Rivers wannabe (may she rest in peace).

And every time, minutes before my scheduled appointment, I'm tempted to call the dental office and say something like, "Sorry, but I can't make it today. My car got a flat and I'm stuck on the side of the highway."

Long Description:
Getting a flu vaccination is the best way to avoid the flu, and fall is the best time to get your flu shot.

"Will you join me for my flu shot?" I asked my boyfriend L. "We can go together this year to get our shots. You'll hold my hand, since I am really not a fan of the needle." Plus, CVS asked me to participate in its campaign*, so I asked L to help me with photographic duties.
